When hip-hop was first created, lyrics had very little to do with it. It was all about just having fun and a good time. As long as the words had a rhyme and rhythm, it was all good. Listen to the Sugar Hill Gang for an example.
I think some people take hip-hop music with no lyrical content too seriously. I agree that some do promote ignorance but most are just here to let us enjoy ourselves. I love lyrical hip-hop as much as the next person, but can you give me a Talib Kweli song that can get people excited in a club?… No? Maybe Common?…. A Tribe Called Quest? Thought so. Are people so stuck up that they can’t enjoy simple lyrics for at least 3 minutes of their life?
